Avoid Hidden Charges in Air and Ocean Freight

Many importers are surprised by the additional hidden charges that can appear on their invoices and how to avoid them.

By John Raymond Infante – Director, Allen & Jones Shipping

Freight rates are just the beginning. Many importers are surprised by the additional charges that can appear on their air freight and ocean freight invoices – charges that aren’t always obvious upfront. Understanding these hidden costs is essential to managing your freight budget and avoiding unpleasant surprises.

1. terminl handeling charges (THC)

THCs are levied by ports for the handling of containers. They vary by location and are often left out of initial quotes. Without visibility, you might assume your all-in rate is lower than it is.

2. document fees

Bills of landing, customs declarations, and certificates of origin all come with fees that can add up quickly. Some forwarders don’t include these in initial quotes, leading to surprises later on.

3. demurrage and detention

As with the previous article, delays in clearing cargo or returning equipment can rack up charges fast. Planning ahead and working with an experienced forwarder helps avoid these penalties.

4. Currency Adjustment Factor (CAF) and Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF)

Fuel price fluctuations and currency variations can affect freight costs. Some quotes exclude these factors, leaving you vulnerable to sudden rate hikes.

5. Port Congestion Surcharges

Busy ports often impose congestion fees when terminals are overloaded. These can be applied with little notice and significantly affect your bottom line.

Understanding and planning for hidden charges is key to protecting your margins. At A&J Shipping, we’re committed to transparent pricing and proactive communication, so you can make informed decisions about your supply chain.

Choosing The Right Freight Forwarder

Choosing the right freight forwarder shouldn't be just about price, too often, choosing the cheapest option leads to unexpected costs!

When selecting a freight forwarder, many businesses focus on price. But too often, choosing the cheapest option leads to unexpected costs that can erode your profits and damage your reputation. In this article, we’ll explore the hidden costs of choosing the wrong freight forwarder and why experience and compliance matter.

Inexperienced forwarders may not manage container movements effectively, leading to delays at ports. This results in demurrage (when containers sit too long at the port) and detention fees (when containers aren’t returned on time). These costs can add thousands of dollars to your shipment—money you didn’t budget for.

A forwarder who lacks local compliance knowledge may mishandle documentation or fail to comply with regulations. This can cause customs delays, fines, or even seizure of goods. Beyond the cost, this affects your reputation and may impact your relationships with suppliers and customers.

Cheap forwarders often have limited customer service, leaving you in the dark about shipment status. Miscommunication can lead to missed pickups, wrong routings, and delayed deliveries—all of which impact your supply chain.

Time spent resolving issues, chasing paperwork, or fixing errors takes focus away from your core business. The wrong freight forwarder can cost you sales opportunities and productivity.

Choosing the right freight forwarder is about more than just price. At A&J Shipping, we prioritize compliance, transparency, and customer service to help you avoid these hidden costs and keep your supply chain moving smoothly.

One thing I see time and time again is importers getting stung by a freight quote that looked great—until the final invoice arrived. One recent client thought they’d scored a deal—only to get hit with over $1,200 in surprise charges. Sound familiar?

It’s one of the most common complaints I hear. And with decades of hands-on experience, I can tell you this: the quote isn’t always the problem. It’s the fine print- or lack of it.

Sound familiar?

It’s one of the most common complaints I hear from importers. And after working in logistics for over 30 years, I can tell you this: the quote isn’t always the problem. It’s the fine print – or lack of it.

So let me break it down.

When dimensions, weights, or icoterms are missing, quotes can’t be accurate. They lok good – until the invoice comes.

My fix: We always get the full story first. That meas checking documents, verifying cargo details, and quoting only when we know the facts.

Late document submission or delays at origin can lead to charges that wre never part of the original plan.

Our process: At JTM  we stay on top of every deadline and keep all parties aligned. Proactivity is everthing in this game.

Airlines and shipping lines charge based on volume or weight – whichever is higher. A ‘small’mistake here can mean a big invoice later.

Some forwarders exclude handling, unpack, or cartage fees to make their quote look cheaper.

Rates in USD, fluctuating exchange rates, and fuel surcharges can all create unexpected shifts.

Truth is, freight isn’t getting cheaper. But it “can”be predictable – with the right systems and the right partner.

If you’ve been stung by a quote that didn’t match reality, let’s talk. I’ll give youa 5-minute review- no hard sell, just real insight.

I’ve seen it too many times to count—goods held up at customs, thousands lost in duty, and all because of one avoidable mistake.

Customs clearance in Australia can feel like a maze. And when you’re busy running a business, it’s easy to overlook the small details that cause big problems.
Here are five of the most common customs pitfalls—and what I recommend to avoid them.

Your duty rate hinges on classification. Too many importers rely on supplier codes or guesswork.

What we do: We double-check classifications before cargo moves. That 5 minutes can save you thousands.

Declare a lower value, and you’re asking for an audit—or worse.

What we do: At JTM We make sure all invoice and incoterm data is transparent and compliant, from the start.

Food, timber, or chemicals? You may need DAFF approval or special licenses.

Misaligned shipping terms cause miscalculated duty. It’s subtle -but costly.

At the end of the day, customs is about preparation. You can’t wing it. And you shouldn’t have to.

If you’ve had clearance issues—or just want peace of mind before your next import—reach out. I’m happy to give your documents a look before they hit the port.

How Tariffs Impact your Freight Costs https://jtmcargo.com.au/news/tariffs-impact/#utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tariffs-impact Mon, 12 May 2025 03:38:10 +0000 https://jtmcargo.com.au/?p=3076 – and What You Can Do About It.
In the world of international trade, tariffs are more than just a line item on an invoice. They can be the make-or-break factor in your landed cost, eroding profit margins and delaying your shipments. Whether you're shipping full containers from Asia or importing air cargo into Australia, it's essential to understand how tariffs affect your freight – and how a trusted freight partner like A&J Shipping can help you stay ahead of the game.

– and What You Can Do About It. In the world of international trade, tariffs are more than just a line item on an invoice. Whether you're shipping full containers from Asia or importing air cargo into Australia, it's essential to understand how tariffs affect your freight – and how a trusted freight partner like A&J Shipping can help you stay ahead of the game.

What Are Tariffs, and Why Do They Matter?

Tariffs are taxes imposed by a government on goods imported from another country. The rates vary depending on the product category, origin, and trade agreements between countries. For importers in Australia, this means the cost of bringing goods in can change dramatically based on government policies – often without warning.

Even a small increase in tariff rates can significantly inflate the final cost of your product, especially when you’re dealing with bulk shipments or tight pricing models.

Total landed cost – Tariffs increase the final cost per unit.
Shipping timelines – Incorrect or missing declarations can lead to delays at customs.
Customs clearance complexity – Different commodities have different duty rates, exemptions, and documentation requirements.

Misclassification of Goods

If your product is classified under the wrong HS Code, you may end up paying more duties than necessary – or face a compliance penalty.

Changes to Trade Agreements

Recent geopolitical shifts (like China-Australia tensions or evolving CPTPP policies) have led to frequent changes in tariff structures.

Unexpected Costs from Consolidators or Overseas Agents

Some exporters fail to flag dutiable goods or declare correct values, leaving Australian importers exposed.

How A&J Shipping Helps You Navigate Tariffs Smoothly

At A&J Shipping, we don’t just move your freight – we help you manage the risks that come with it. As an Australian Trusted Trader, we are uniquely positioned to streamline customs processes, reduce delays, and help eligible importers access tariff concessions where possible.

Why Chinese exporters are turning to Australia

What’s Driving the Shift Away from the U.S.?

The high tariff not only affects profit margins, but also introduces significant uncertainty in trade planning. Many Chinese exporters, especially those shipping consumer goods, electronics, fashion, and e-commerce parcels, are now seeking markets with more stable trade relationships. Australia offers a compelling option with:

  • No punitive tariffs
  • Fast-growing e-commerce market
  • Proximity and shorter shipping times
  • Reliable customs processes and infrastructure

Australia’s consumer market is known for its high purchasing power and strong online buying behavior. With platforms like Shein, Temu, and AliExpress already penetrating the market, it’s clear that Australia is open to global online sellers. Additionally, the Australian Border Force supports streamlined clearance processes for low-value goods through SAC (Self-Assessed Clearance), enabling Chinese exporters to deliver with speed and minimal customs cost.

The growth of online sales - SAC Customs Clearance

What Is SAC Clearance?

A Guide for E-Commmerce Sellers

What is SAC Clearance

SAC stands for Self-Assessed Clearance. It’s a process used by the Australian Border Force to streamline customs clearance for goods with a declared value under AUD $1,000. Instead of going through full customs processing, SAC-eligible shipments can be lodged quickly using a simplified declaration process. This allows for faster turnaround, minimal intervention, and typically no duties or taxes for qualifying goods.

SAC is commonly used by:

  • E-commerce platforms like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress
  • Dropshippers and online sellers shipping B2C into Australia
  • Consolidators sending grouped parcels via airfreight
  • Logistics partners handling direct-to-consumer delivery

Why SAC Clearance Matters in 2025

With rising demand for fast and affordable international shipping, SAC clearance enables sellers to enter the Australian market without complex customs barriers. Especially as U.S. trade becomes more expensive due to new tariffs, SAC opens the door for efficient entry into a high-spend, English-speaking market like Australia.

More concerning, however, are potential disruptions to Australian exports. China, one of Australia’s largest trade partners, has already signalled that it may retaliate against the U.S. for its actions. This poses a serious risk to Australian industries, particularly in mining and agriculture, which rely heavily on global trade routes and market access.

Navigating the Current Shipping Challenges: Global Shipping Crisis, Geopolitical Conflicts, and Capacity Crunch

In today’s interconnected world, the shipping and logistics industry is facing unprecedented challenges. From the global shipping crisis to geopolitical conflicts and capacity crunches, businesses must navigate a complex landscape to ensure the smooth flow of goods. Let’s delve into these pressing issues and explore strategies to overcome them.

The global shipping crisis has been a significant disruptor, affecting supply chains worldwide. The pandemic initially triggered this crisis, causing port closures, labor shortages, and a surge in e-commerce demand. Even as the world recovers, the ripple effects continue to impact the industry.

One of the most notable consequences is the container shortage. With containers stuck in ports and warehouses, shipping costs have skyrocketed, and delivery times have lengthened[1]. Additionally, the Red Sea shipping crisis has further strained global supply chains, with vessels rerouting around Africa to avoid conflict zones[1].

Shipping container shortage

Geopolitical Conflicts

Geopolitical tensions are another major factor disrupting global logistics. Conflicts in key regions, such as the South China Sea and Eastern Europe, have led to rerouted shipping lanes, increased insurance costs, and delays[2]

The ongoing war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East have particularly impacted the availability of critical materials and the stability of regional supply networks[2]. Businesses must adopt a resilience mindset to navigate these challenges. This involves developing geopolitical risk mitigation techniques, diversifying supply chains, and collaborating with local experts to ensure secure cargo movement[3].

Capacity Crunch

The capacity crunch is a persistent issue in the logistics industry. A combination of factors, including Labor shortages, increased demand, and natural disasters, has led to a tight logistics capacity[4]. The pandemic exacerbated these issues, with manufacturing plant shutdowns and port congestion causing significant delays[5].

To overcome capacity crunches, businesses can leverage third-party logistics providers (3PLs) to optimise their supply chains. Additionally, implementing advanced technologies, such as AI and predictive analytics, can help improve supply chain visibility and efficiency[4].

Strategies for Overcoming Shipping Challenges

  1. Diversify Supply Chains: Spread risk by sourcing materials from multiple suppliers and regions.
  2. Leverage Technology: Use AI and predictive analytics to enhance supply chain visibility and decision-making.
  3. Collaborate with Experts: Partner with local experts and 3PLs to navigate complex logistics landscapes.
  4. Develop Contingency Plans: Prepare for disruptions by having backup plans and alternative routes in place.
  5. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of geopolitical developments and industry trends to anticipate and respond to changes.

By understanding and addressing these challenges, businesses can build more resilient and efficient supply chains. At A&J Shipping, we are committed to helping our clients navigate these complexities and ensure the smooth flow of goods across the globe.

Trade Wars and What it means for international trade

The global trade landscape is in a state of flux, with escalating tensions between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and new warnings from China about necessary countermeasures to protect its economic interests. This brewing trade conflict highlights the fragile nature of international supply chains and raises serious questions about the stability of global commerce.

The latest trade war comes on the heels of a series of global disruptions, including the pandemic and the recent Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. These events have underscored just how interconnected—and vulnerable—global supply chains are. With tariffs being imposed by Canada and Mexico in retaliation, businesses worldwide are feeling the strain.

The effects of these trade tensions could extend far beyond North America. As costs for businesses increase and inflationary pressures mount, the global economy faces an uncertain future. Financial markets have already shown signs of volatility, and prolonged trade disputes threaten to slow down economic growth, reducing business confidence and hindering investment opportunities across the globe.

close up of Australian $50 notes - Australian economy

How Australia's Economy Could Be Affected

While Australia is not directly involved in the trade conflict, the repercussions of this escalating situation could still be significant for the Australian economy. The uncertainty surrounding international trade could place downward pressure on the Australian share market and weaken the value of the Australian dollar.

The Need for Strategic Diversification and Resilience

In the face of these challenges, Australian businesses must look to diversify their trade relationships and build more resilient supply chains. This means exploring new markets, securing alternative suppliers, and adjusting to the changing global trade dynamics.

Moreover, with protectionist policies on the rise worldwide, it is essential for Australia to carefully navigate these shifting geopolitical landscapes. Strategic policy adjustments will be necessary to safeguard the country’s long-term economic stability and ensure that Australian industries remain competitive in an increasingly uncertain global market.

The Future of Delivery

How New Technologies are Changing the Way You Receive Packages

Have you ever wondered how your online orders get to your doorstep so quickly? The answer lies in the latest innovations in last-mile delivery. Let’s break down what last-mile delivery is and how new technologies like drones and autonomous vehicles are making it faster and more efficient for you.

Last-mile delivery is the final step in the shipping process, where your package travels from a local hub or warehouse to your home. It’s called the “last mile” because it’s the last leg of the journey, even though it might be more than a mile. This step is crucial because it’s where most delays and costs occur.

Close up of a drone carrying a delivery box and flying over the city

Drones: The Sky’s the Limit

Imagine a small flying robot delivering your package right to your doorstep. That’s what they can do! This may seem like something you would only see in a sci-fi movie, but it’s already a reality. Even in Australia some companies have been approved to deliver pharmaceutical and medical supplies. Here’s why and how they help:

Speed: Drones can fly over traffic and take the shortest route to your home, making deliveries much faster.

Efficiency: They use less energy than traditional delivery trucks, which is better for the environment.

Accessibility: Drones can reach places that are hard to get to by road, like high-rise buildings or remote areas.

Autonomous vehicles are self-driving cars or robots that can deliver packages without a human driver. This may sound futuristic, but it’s already happening. Companies like Nuro and Starship Technologies are deploying autonomous delivery vehicles in various cities. Here’s why they’re great:

Cost-Effective: They reduce the need for drivers, which can lower delivery costs.

Safety: These vehicles are equipped with advanced sensors and AI to navigate safely and avoid obstacles.

24/7 Service: They can operate around the clock, ensuring you get your packages even faster.

Why these innovations matter to you

Faster Deliveries: With drones and autonomous vehicles, you can expect your online orders to arrive quicker than ever.

More Reliable: These technologies reduce the chances of delays and errors, so you get your packages on time.

Eco-Friendly: By using less fuel and optimizing delivery routes, these innovations help reduce the environmental impact of shipping.

The next time you receive a package, it might just be delivered by a drone or an autonomous vehicle. These exciting technologies are transforming last-mile delivery, making it faster, more efficient, and more reliable for you. At Allen & Jones Shipping, we’re excited about these advancements and how they can improve your delivery experience.
